Pangukur temple has an interesting history and meaning. It is said that, in the past, this place was used to measure the strength of Bali. This is where Kebo Iwa's strength was measured before he became the mahapatih of the Ancient Balinese Kingdom. Oral tradition in Pejeng and its surroundings states that this temple became a place where ancient Balinese kings measured the land of Bali, including finding a suitable location to build a central temple. Although the initial plan was to build Pura Basukian to the north of Pura Pangukur-size, eventually the location chosen was the waist area of Mount Agung (now known as Besakih Village)
Besides having historical value, Pangukur-size Temple also stores prehistoric and historical relics. Inside there is the Great Temple and ancient rites stored in the most of Ratu Bujangga. To the east of the temple, precisely on the edge of Tukad Pakerisan, there is Goa Garba, which became the same place in Mahapatih Kebo Iwa of the Bedulu Kingdom when he wanted to add buildings, including making a boundary wall of Pangukur-size Temple
Pangukur Temple is one of the historical sites that enrich Balinese culture and spirituality.
